Penzance Literary Festival

In a changing world, the theme chosen for the 2019 festival is Borderlines.

The Literary Festival celebrates its 10th edition by offering something for everyone –long-standing supporters, recent converts and, we hope, some new faces. The Acorn will be hosting a range of events – from Michael Bird’s talk ‘Studio Voices’ on Wednesday afternoon, through to our special Cornish evening on Saturday.

Two of this year’s events will come as an inclusive deal: drink from the bar, food from the Honey Pot café, and ticket – in short everything you need for a great night out. One of these is our launch event on Wednesday evening, which will include not only tapas and a drink but also the first performance of a specially-commissioned poem from Gray Lightfoot (who also has his own event on Wednesday), well-chosen words from Patrick Gale and music from JX Coudrille’s trio Gwelhellin – a combination sure to get the Festival off to a flying start. We also hope to see plenty of you for our Cornish evening on Saturday, with talks from Will Coleman and Sue Ellery-Hill (biographer of folk star Brenda Wootton), a special performance of ‘Rebellion’ by musicians An Gof before or after your drink and Cornish-themed canapes, and finally a ‘Shout’ led by Hilary Coleman.

And of course, there are a whole host of other events – from old favourites, emergent writers and big names, covering poetry, fiction and non-fiction. Without breaking the bank, you can be enchanted by the power of stonework, contemplate choices at the crossroads, and stray into the world of ‘accidental erotica’. You can sit back and appreciate our first Booker prizewinning contributor, Alan Hollinghurst, pit your wits against the quizmaster in our regular Big Quiz evening, or take a literary walk with Anna McClary. And of course, there are dozens of more events, at the Acorn and elsewhere in the centre of town.
