Saturday 17th March - 8:00 pm
Unlikely, but true: a Penzance band that started up in 2008 to play Salsa to fans of Latin Music in West Cornwall has toured all over Southwest England, workshopped with over 1000 Cornish children, played many festivals including Tropical Pressure, transformed St Just Market Square into a mass of gyrating bodies, boldly taken authentic Cuban music into rural communities where live salsa has never been before, and worked continuously up to the issue of this 2018 Acorn programme ….
Like the Acorn itself, Kabasa had its ups and downs. Rumours of the demise of both abounded- they played the sell-out “Last night at The Acorn concert” in 2010.” The Acorn has since gone from strength to strength, but In late 2012 bandleader and founder Andy Lowe relocated to Poland, so the remainers shared the vocal duties between them and recruited new members. Since then, the band has fed its many mouths despite cuts and austerity- and.in 2017 they got a vibrant new singer, Natalie Mossayebi, and gained a rich 3- part vocal harmony sound as typical in South American music. On this gala night they’ll be joined on drum kit by a friend who has regularly deputised with them- Damian Rodd out of Cornwall’s premier Soul band, The Grace Notes.
The 8-piece line-up will be a stunning spectacle and irresistible dance opportunity, but the first half of the gala will be also enlivened by the Latino ensemble Juan Graterol Y Su Conjunto Gozon, Juan performs songs from his native Venezuela (some taught to him by his Grandmother in Caracas) on the “Cuatro” (Latin American 4 string guitar) backed by percussion, guitars, trumpet and bass. Conjunto have already charmed at Tropical Pressure and “Parklive” several years running. There is a Spanish expression for Spring fever: Locura De Marzo…and we invite you to join us on St Patrick’s Day for some special March Madness!
“Their Music is the best mixture of warm live sounds with a very professional presentation…I can’t imagine an audience who wouldn’t enjoy one of their gigs…a really authentic Latin sound.” Mike Sagar-Fenton, Live Music Coordinator, Golwan Festival 2008-9
