Falmouth Soul Sensation was formed in 2007, with the intention of offering local musicians and singers of all ages and abilities the opportunity to work in a band environment. The result was a vibrant and exciting mix of ages and instruments supported by experienced musicians. The band still fulfils it’s original function but has grown into one of the most popular party bands in the county!
During it’s 10 year career, the band has been booked back to almost everywhere it has played – performing 10 years running as Falmouth’s top choice at the party night at the end of the town’s annual carnival, hosted originally at the old Watersports Centre, but more recently as the opening night of the prestigious Falmouth Week celebration on Event’s Square. 3 years at The River Festival, 8 years running at The Oyster Festival and 5 years running at the wonderful, international music festival in Looe, alongside The Selecter, Bad Manners, Wilko Johnson, Bryan Ferry and hosts of many others at Looe Music Festival.
In 2014, we played to a sell-out crowd at the Acorn in Penzance, raising money for the ‘Save the Lido’ Campaign to restore the iconic, art-deco Lido on The Penzance waterfront and have been back every year since, raising money for ‘Médicins Sans Frontiéres’, ‘Amnesty International’, and others. The band also supported the Three Degrees at the Hall For Cornwall on the West Country leg of their tour in 2015, and the legendary Geno Washington in 2017. The Penzance Golowan Festival at the Ritz in 2015 and 3 returns to the Old Town Hall in St Just. The band’s performance at the Lafrowda Festival was lauded as the ‘best act on the bill’ by many. Another regular date for the band is Penryn Fayre, every August since 2012. Not to mention Murdoch Day, and twice -yearly gigs at Five Degrees West, the only pub we have found in Falmouth big enough to fit us in, since 2014.
The Rhythm Section currently comprises of bassist Andy Roberts, whose days on the road with the Cornish ‘Noisy Boys’ are renowned locally. Our true-to-soul style guitarist, Andrew Thomas is a founding member of the band, occasionally joined on stage by Paul Buzza, who can more often be seen by his mixing desk and producing the Soul Sensation sound. Last but certainly not least, is Bob Black whose 1980’s appearances on Top of the Pops with the Flying Lizards were just part of his career in artist management through the post-punk era, before returning to his soul roots as founder and drummer with the band, occasionally deputised for by local legendary percussionist and sticksman, Adam Shore.
The Trademark Horn Section of the band, comprises of Rhod Cox on Tenor Sax, local artist Andrew Beard on Baritone, and the dulcet tones of Bass and Tenor Trombone from Greg Williams and Lizzie Myhill.
Those sparkling female harmonies come from Miss Eleanor Gow, now the longest serving of the band’s vocal line up, devotee to all-things-60’s-soul and dancer extraordinaire, not seen without her partner in crime, Tamara Carroll, whose classic soul voice has been compared to a young Aretha Franklin or Gladys Knight, though probably closer to Chaka Khan. Local legend Linda Clay adds maturity and experience to the fabulous four, completed by the latest vocal recruit, Grace Harvey, who brings a modern-soul style to the quartet.
Sitting in with us regularly between busy working lives are keyboarder Martin Skews, and singer-percussionist, Nigel Skews. Occasional guest appearances occur, from former players, notably David Oughton and Sam Amps, on keys and Tenor Sax.
This is the Line Up that has earned the accolade and prefix ‘Fabulous’.
