Sunday 10th September - 8:00 pm
The first half of the show focuses on traditional tango repertoire from Osvaldo Pugliese, Horacio Salgan and Anibal Troilo as well as concert repertoire by Astor Piazzolla, and we welcome dancers to participate in the action! After an interval, the ensemble will explore some of the new sounds coming out of downtown Buenos Aires, mixing tango with jazz and contemporary classical music, from Diego Schissi (recent winner of the Gardel prize) and the great violinist Ramiro Gallo.
As well as running their own tango groups, the members of Almagro Ensemble have performed with tango groups at festivals around the UK and Europe including on the touring and West End show ‘Midnight Tango’, the Halle International Tango Festival (Germany), the Vamos festival (Newcastle), Aldeburgh, Salisbury and Bath International Festivals, and the Buenos Aires Tango Festival. Between them, the members of Almagro work with the top touring tango ensembles in the UK: Deco Ensemble, Tango Siempre, Tango Volcano, the London Tango Orchestra and El Ultimo Tango.
Outside of tango, they are hugely in demand as jazz, session and classical performers working and recording with an eclectic range of ensembles, from the Oslo Philharmonic, English National Opera, BBC and London Symphony Orchestras in the classical world to Tim Garland, Charlie Watts, BBC Big Band and Jacqueline Dankworth from the jazz world and Questlove, Russell Watson, and Jonathan Jeremiah from the pop world.
